Few times we do see QuickBooks alert a message it says “multi user Mode is Off.” It’s not an error. It just means your QuickBooks company file with not share with others. If more than one person needs to work in QuickBooks, you’ll need to switch in multi user mode on. If it’s just you, you can leave it as is and keep working.
What Hosting Mode Means
Hosting mode is simply QuickBooks’ way of sharing your company file.
Hosting ON – The computer (usually the server) is sharing the file so others can open it.
Hosting OFF – The computer isn’t sharing, so only one person can open the file.
If hosting is off and someone else tries to log in, they won’t get access and you’ll probably see errors.
How to Turn Hosting On
Open QuickBooks on the computer that’s acting as the server.
Go to File → Utilities.
If you see Host Multi-User Access, click it.
That’s it. Now other computers on your network can open the same file, as long as they have QuickBooks installed and permission to reach the folder where the file is saved.
How to Turn Hosting Off
Sometimes you don’t need hosting, or you’re fixing a problem and want it off. Here’s how:
Open QuickBooks on the server.
Go to File → Utilities.
If you see Stop Hosting Multi-User Access, click it.
Now QuickBooks is back in single-user mode.
Hosting mode might sound technical, but it’s really just a switch that controls whether other people can get into the company file. Turn it on when you’re working with your team, and turn it off if you’re on your own or troubleshooting.
